Andhra-Style Mango Dal is tangy, spicy, and full of flavor. This dal is made of Toor dal(Arhar dal/Pigeon peas(yellow lentils), raw mango slices, spices, and lovely aromatics. This is my take on this traditional South Indian Recipe—a vegan and plant-based meal.
What is Raw Mango Dal?
Yellow lentils are cooked with unripe/raw mangoes. This recipe is tangy, spicy, and super delicious. It is the ultimate comfort food served over white rice or any millet. The recipe is simple; it takes only a few ingredients to make this delicious side.
There are several ways to cook this dish, and this is my take on it. It is a South Indian-inspired dish. Growing up, we never had this dal at home because we were in the north of India. We had our version of mango dal, which was also delicious, but everything was different, from the thickness of the dish to the ingredients used in tempering.
After spending a few years in Hyderabad, I started making it. I loved this raw mango dal or Mamidikaya Pappu. This dal was thick, creamy, tangy, and spicy, and after having a first bite of it with steaming rice and a dollop of ghee, you will be in the ultimate food paradise.

Serving suggestion,
You can serve them along with white rice or brown rice.
All types of Millet and Quinoa can be a great accompaniment.
It can also be served along roti or plain paratha.
Can we store it?
Store them in small serving sizes in freezer-safe containers. Just before serving, microwave them and garnish with fresh cilantro. If you can add some ghee, that would make this taste as delicious as super fresh dal.
