Wash and soak the lentil for 30 minutes in sufficient water.
Press the saute button on the Instant pot .Once it displays hot add dry red chilli and cumin seeds.Let them sizzle and crackle for some time .
Add chopped onion and saute till they look transparent .At this moment add chopped garlic and saute till it looks light brown .Add green chilli and ginger .Saute for 30 second .
Add turmeric powder ,red chilli powder(if adding ),coriander powder.Saute it for 30 second .
Add chopped tomato and salt to the spice mix .Add one tbsp of water and stir the spice mix for 1 minute .
Add soaked lentil and 3 cups of water to the spice mix.Add garam masala powder and stir it once .
Cover it with the lid and the turn the vent to seal in position .
Cook on high pressure for 4 minute.The texture will be perfect ,not very mushy .If you like dal to be very soft, cook for 5 minutes.
Let the steam release naturally .Remove the lid.Mix the dal with a big spoon ,ladle or whisker .It depends on personal choice .I personally feel that mixing the dal by stirring it gives a wonderful texture .
Taste the salt .If needed to add ,add now.Mix lemon /lime juice and garnish with fresh cilantro .
Serve with your choice of grain or bread .
